A major breakthrough in the fight against electricity vandalism as nine suspects were apprehended by local youths this morning for their alleged involvement in the ongoing vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Ohafia LGA of Abia State which has kept the community without power for over five years, ABN TV reports.

The suspects, identified as vandals, collaborators, conspirators, and buyers of stolen electrical equipment, were caught in a joint operation led by the Ohafia Youth Chairman, Mr. Obasi. Although nine men were arrested, some of their accomplices are still at large, with efforts ongoing to track them down.

What has taken many by surprise is that a significant number of the arrested suspects are natives of Ohafia. This revelation has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom are questioning the motives behind the vandalism. “Is it possible that these individuals are comfortable with the darkness that has plagued our community for years?” one concerned local asked.

The vandals were specifically accused of targeting a transformer at the Timber Market in Ebem Ohafia, which had been a key part of the community’s power restoration plan. Additionally, they were found to have sold stolen cables, which had been brought to the area by Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, the Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency. These cables were intended to restore electricity to the community, but their theft has delayed efforts to bring light back to Ohafia.

Ohafia, a once-thriving town in Abia State, has experienced a major setback in its development due to the continuous destruction of power lines and electrical equipment. The prolonged power outage has led to the collapse of many businesses, leaving the local economy in disarray. Despite efforts from key community leaders to restore power, including with the approach of the Christmas season, vandals have repeatedly sabotaged these attempts.

Among those advocating for the restoration of electricity is Mr. Ifeanyi Okali, Director of ABN TV & Radio. Through his media platforms, Okali has consistently appealed to both the state and federal governments for support. His most recent plea was made during *Dr. Alex Otti Speaks to Abians*, a monthly media interaction with journalists, where he directly called on Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti to prioritize the electrification of Ohafia.

Speaking to ABN TV, Chief Emeka MBA (Bam Bam), the President General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), commended the Ohafia youths for their bold actions in apprehending the nine vandals. He also called on all Ohafia youths to unite in the fight against crime in the community. “This is a significant step forward, and I urge all our youths to continue working together to rid Ohafia of crime and restore peace and development,” he said.

Mr. Obasi also praised the dedication and determination of the Ohafia youths in their fight against power theft and vandalism. “This operation is a critical step toward bringing light back to our community and reigniting our development. We are committed to seeing this through, ensuring those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.

The nine individuals arrested will be handed over to law enforcement for further investigation and prosecution. Local residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help protect the community’s infrastructure and ensure the restoration of electricity.
