Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Monday, November 11, 2024, lifted the suspension of the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Fidelis Mnyim.

The decision to reinstate Mnyim was announced at a meeting of the State Executive Council in Makurdi, the state capital.

The Attorney General had been suspended on October 23, 2024, following his controversial move to involve the state in a legal challenge questioning the constitutionality of the laws establishing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The suit, which raised concerns among political observers, sparked a public outcry.

In a statement to the press following the meeting, Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, explained that Mnyim’s reinstatement followed his withdrawal of the state from the contentious lawsuit.

“The Attorney General met all the conditions for his reinstatement by promptly retracting the state’s involvement in the matter,” Kula said.

Mnyim’s reinstatement comes after weeks of uncertainty and speculation regarding the handling of the legal matter, which had cast a shadow over the governor’s administration.
