BREAKING: 6 Terrorism Charges Slammed Against Self-styled Activist Mahdi Shehu by DSS

A self-styled activist who was rearrested by the Department of State Services (DSS), Mahdi Shehu has been charged with terrorism.

The DSS levelled a five-count terrorism-related charges on the activist after he was rearrested by security operatives at his clinic in the Unguwar Dosa area of Kaduna State.

Shehu had also been granted bail by a Kaduna State High Court on the condition that he must produce two sureties who are reputable clerics within the jurisdiction of the court.

However, following his rearrest, the DSS in its fresh move submitted an ex-parte motion to the court to grant it 60 days to detain Shehu.

According to the DSS, the 60 days will help the secret police in its effort to facilitate investigation against the activist.

Recall that Shehu had claimed that the Nigerian government had secretly permitted the French government to establish a military base in the Northern part of the country, an allegation which the Federal Government described as an impediment of the nation’s national security.

DSS terrorism-related charges against Mahdi Shehu are:

1. False Publication to Cause Public Alarm, contrary to Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act;

2. Dissemination of Terrorism-Related False Information, against Section 26(2)(a) and (b) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022;

3. Intentional Dissemination of False Information, contrary to Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended);

4. False Allegation of Treasonable Act, in violation of Section 41 of the Criminal Code Act; and

5. Use of Social Media to Support False Allegations of National Security Threat, contrary to Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.
