At least seven people lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash on the Kaltungo–Cham Road in Gombe State.
Mr Samson Kaura, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, confirmed the incident on Thursday.
He reported that 31 individuals sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash, which involved a trailer carrying soft drinks and 38 passengers, consisting of 34 males, two females, and two children.
Among the deceased were five males, one female, and one child. The bodies were taken to the morgue at the General Hospital in Kaltungo, while the injured were receiving medical attention at the same facility. Kaura attributed the accident to suspected brake failure of the truck.
He urged Nigerians to reconsider their choice of travelling in trailers to cut down transportation costs, emphasising the high risks associated with such decisions.
“Always assess the cost of road traffic crashes and the value of human lives compared to transportation fares,” he advised.
He remarked, “This was a single-vehicle accident, yet we have numerous casualties. We spent an entire day managing the aftermath.”
Kaura stressed the dangers of boarding trailers or heavy-duty vehicles, which are intended for goods, not passengers. He also urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained to prevent future crashes.
