Amad Diallo has quickly risen to become the new darling of Manchester United fans despite the lacklustre season they are having so far.

The Red Devils have registered inconsistent performances this campaign. They will spend Christmas in the bottom half of the table for the first time in league history.

The latest chastening defeat came at the hands of Bournemouth, who put three goals past them at Old Trafford for the second season running.

Amad Diallo excels under Ruben Amorim

But despite these, Diallo has offered a lot of promise, excelling under new manager Ruben Amorim. The Ivorian was the star of the show the previous weekend in the Manchester derby, where his late heroics earned them a vital 2-1 win.

Diallo showed the same glimpses under former manager Erik ten Hag, but he wasn’t a regular starter as he is now. Former United’s assistant manager Benni McCarthy has lifted the lid on why Ten Hag didn’t trust Diallo.

Why Erik ten Hag didn’t play Amad Diallo

McCarthy claims Ten Hag preferred to work with the players he had signed, which is why he gave Antony numerous chances and overlooked Diallo.

“Tactically, when we set up, the manager felt that Antony was the best, better player for the job that he wanted because he knew Antony from Ajax. He was his player, so he invested in him, and the club supported him,” he said on Podcast and Chill Network via MEN.

The South African legend explained Diallo was also a victim of the many attacking options Ten Hag had.

“Someone had to miss out, and unfortunately for Amad, the manager goes with the player he thinks is probably more capable for those types of games tactically, defensively and attacking.”

Diallo stats this season

The 22-year-old had five goals and eight assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season, as captured by Transfermarkt.
