On Wednesday, Prince Melubari Akekue, the Chairman of the Governing Council of Eha-Amufu College of Education, met with Hon. Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi and Hon. Abubakar Hassan Fulata to discuss the Bill aimed at upgrading the college to a University of Education.

Spearheaded by Professor Nnamchi, the Bill has already completed its second reading in the House and is now awaiting a public hearing to be organised by the House Committee on University Education.

Prince Akekue expressed his appreciation to Professor Nnamchi for his support, emphasising that the upgrade would significantly enhance the institution’s enrolment, which has seen a decline in recent years.

He also requested Professor Nnamchi’s assistance in revitalising the Igbo Studies department, which faces potential closure due to low student numbers.

In reply, Professor Nnamchi proposed the establishment of a scholarship programme for students from his constituency interested in studying the Igbo Language at the college.

The meeting with Hon. Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, proved fruitful as he assured that the public hearing process would be expedited once the National Assembly releases the necessary funds.

This development marks a significant step forward in elevating the institution’s status and promoting education in the region. Established in 1981, Eha-Amufu College of Education is a federal higher education institution located in Enugu State.
