The Federal government is working on a plan to finance its HIV response without relying heavily on foreign aid.
This move follows concerns about potential changes in U.S. support for HIV treatment in the country.
The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) stated that Nigeria aims to maintain progress in fighting HIV by mobilizing local resources, working with stakeholders, and advocating for policies that support sustainable funding.
The government remains committed to ending AIDS by 2030.
Although the U.S. government recently paused foreign aid for 90 days, a waiver was issued to allow continued distribution of HIV medicines and medical services.
Nigeria welcomed the decision but is preparing for possible funding shifts in the future.
NACA urged state governments, private sector partners, lawmakers, civil society groups, and the media to support efforts in ensuring uninterrupted HIV treatment and prevention programs.
The government also expressed appreciation for international partners’ contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
