The Fulani community in Nigeria has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the continued detention of their leader, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello Bodejo, by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In an open letter signed by Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman, the Publicity Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, the community described Bodejo’s detention as “illegal and unconstitutional.” They claim that despite his arrest on December 9, 2024, by Nigerian Army personnel in Keffi, Nasarawa State, and subsequent transfer to the DSS, no formal charges have been filed against him.
A ruling by Justice Mohammed Zubairu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on December 30, 2024, had ordered his immediate release, but he was allegedly re-arrested the following day.
The Fulani leaders emphasized Bodejo’s contributions to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 elections, questioning why a key government supporter was being targeted. They also raised concerns about his health, stating that he previously received medical treatment abroad and requires urgent care.
The group called on President Tinubu to uphold the rule of law by ensuring Bodejo’s release, warning that his continued detention could lead to unrest within the Fulani community.
While expressing support for Tinubu’s administration, they also referenced the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development, expressing hope that it would address their grievances.
“The entire Fulani community in Nigeria has confidence in your Renewed Hope Agenda,” the letter stated, urging the president to take swift action.
