The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has intervened and ordered action for prerogative mercy on the case of an indigene, Segun Olowookere, who was convicted and sentenced to death for stealing fowl.
Naija News reports that the Segun’s mother, Folashade Olowookere, tearfully narrated the ordeal of her only son, currently in prison, in an interview on the YouTube podcast of Nollywood actress, Biola Adebayo.
The video attracted the attention of many Nigerians, including Governor Adeleke.
In a statement by the spokesperson to the State Governor, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke directed the immediate investigation and pardoning action on Segun’s case.
Governor Adeleke also ordered the Attorney General to intervene and ensure Segun is listed for the prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.
The statement added, “I have read about the case. I recognise separation of powers in our democracy. In this particular case, I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man.
“Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.
“I assure the public that the matter is receiving my direct attention. A sense of urgency is also attached to our response to the matter as a responsible state government.”
