PDP Acting Chairman Advocates for Political Alliance to Challenge Tinubu in 2027.

Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized the importance of political alliances in the bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Damagum asserted that any opposition coalition without the PDP would lack the strength to succeed.

Responding to recent comments by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who dismissed the possibility of an alliance with the PDP, Damagum reaffirmed his party’s position as the strongest opposition force in Nigeria.

PDP’s Strength in Opposition

Damagum highlighted the PDP’s resilience, citing its ability to win elections despite being out of federal power for nearly a decade. According to him, the party’s consistency and widespread presence across Nigeria demonstrate its indispensability in any political collaboration aimed at electoral success.

He stated:
“The PDP is the only party that has consistently won elections without being in power. For over two decades, the PDP has remained steadfast, maintaining its identity and producing governors and lawmakers in every part of the country.”

The PDP Chairman further criticized previous alliances formed by other political parties, arguing that they failed to achieve meaningful results.
“Even if four parties merge without the PDP, they cannot win an election. We’ve seen this play out repeatedly. Where are those parties now? Even their alliances with other parties have not delivered the desired results,” he remarked.

Reflecting on Internal Challenges

Damagum also addressed past issues within the PDP, acknowledging challenges that arose during his tenure as the Deputy National Chairman (North). He admitted that while efforts were made to resolve internal conflicts, they were not entirely successful.

“I admit that some of [Senator Kwankwaso’s] claims about the challenges we faced back then are valid. As the Deputy National Chairman (North) at the time, my powers were limited, but we tried to resolve the issues. Unfortunately, those efforts fell short. He himself acknowledged this in previous interviews,” Damagum explained.

The Road to 2027

Damagum’s remarks underscore the PDP’s intention to play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections. By calling for a united front among opposition parties, he signaled the party’s readiness to collaborate while reaffirming its position as a key player in the nation’s democracy.

As the 2027 elections approach, the dynamics of political alliances and opposition strategies will likely shape the contest for Nigeria’s presidency. The PDP’s ability to navigate these challenges and foster partnerships could determine its success in the race to unseat the incumbent administration.
