Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has spoken about the strong bond between Bayelsa and Rivers States despite past disagreements. In a video that was shared by SYMFONI TV, during a Christmas visit to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Diri praised the peaceful relationship between the two neighboring states since Fubara became governor.

Diri addressed a major issue that once caused tension between the states: the Soku oil wells dispute. This conflict had led to heated arguments in the past. However, he noted that both states have now agreed to return to the way things were before the disagreement, ensuring peace and unity.

The governor also recounted a time when the destruction of Bayelsa property in Rivers State nearly led to violence. He revealed that some Bayelsa youths had threatened to walk all the way to Port Harcourt to confront the situation, even if it meant facing bullets. However, Diri convinced them to stay peaceful and follow the law instead of resorting to violence. The matter was eventually taken to the Supreme Court, where Bayelsa won the case.

Since Governor Fubara came into office, Diri said they have been working together to resolve any lingering issues. He emphasized the importance of finding peaceful solutions between “brothers, neighbors, and friends.”

“You can’t separate these two states,” he said. “They have so much in common.”

Diri’s message highlights the importance of dialogue and understanding in resolving conflicts, especially between close neighbors. His efforts reflect a commitment to peace and unity between Bayelsa and Rivers States.
