The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a warehouse in Kaduna following the discovery of expired food and cosmetic products worth seventy -five million naira.
The disclosure was made in a press statement issued to newsmen by the Director of investigation and enforcement, NAFDAC Mr. Shaba Muhammed, in Kaduna.
According to him, the facility, identified as Amanat.com, is situated on PP2A Bayajidda Street, near Kano Road and New Ogbomosho Road in the city, adding that the operation was initiated after a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
Shaba also noted that a surveillance operation by NAFDAC’s investigation team uncovered a massive stockpile of expired goods, including: Biscuits, Dairy milk, Vegetable oil, Soft drinks and Detergents
He added that authorities also caught workers in the act of transferring expired biscuits from their original packaging into sacks an apparent attempt to repackage and resell the substandard goods.
The Managing Director of the warehouse, according to him has been arrested for questioning, and further investigations are underway.
Muhammed reaffirmed that severe regulatory penalties would be imposed once the investigation is concluded, sending a strong warning to others engaged in similar illicit activities.
NAFDAC urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing regulated products and to report any suspicious items to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Consumers are also encouraged to report fraudulent activities to the agency to help combat the sale of expired and substandard products.
