BREAKING: NIMC okays FIC for W’Bank-backed identification exercise

The National Identity Management Commission has authorized FIC Professionals Network Plc to take part in the World Bank-backed Identity for Development.

This disclosed in a statement signed by the Executive Director, FIC Professionals Network Plc, Segun Shonubi, on Thursday.

The ID4D Project aims to create a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, improving service delivery, governance, and fostering growth in the digital economy.

The statement noted that FIC Professionals Network Plc was granted approval to participate in the program after meeting all the required criteria.

In the statement, Shonubi mentioned that FIC, ” A recognised stakeholder-owned organisation and key player in the financial inclusion ecosystem that recently partnered with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria to introduce the Agency Banking Certification programme for those desirous to become financial inclusion experts, FIC was approved to participate in the programme after satisfying the set requirements.

“The approval to participate was conveyed through a letter dated January 23, 2025, signed on behalf of the DG/CEO of the Commission, Engr. (Mrs.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote.”

He further stated “He added, “Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project represents a bold and ambitious initiative to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, thereby enhancing service delivery, improving governance, and unlocking opportunities for Nigerians in the digital economy. The potential of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project to revolutionise identification and access to services is immense.”

In June 2024, the World Bank provided $45.5 million to the National Identity Management Commission for the ID4D project.

According to the World Bank’s implementation report, the funds were distributed in multiple tranches from December 2021 to April 2024, with disbursements continuing.
