Court Vacates Remand Order Against Reno Omokri in Case Filed by Pastor Paul Enenche

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court has revoked the remand order issued against Reno Omokri, a former presidential spokesman and bestselling author, in a case brought by Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre.

The court had earlier ordered Omokri’s remand without notifying him. However, following an appeal by his legal team, Osa Director & Co., Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna ruled on January 30, 2025, that Omokri’s name be removed from the First Information Report (FIR).

Statement released by Omokri’s lawyer reads:

“As lawyers for Reno Omokri, a bestselling author and former Presidential spokesman, we are happy to report that the the remand order by Pastor Paul Enenche against our client, has been vacated by the same court which ordered it.

In an Appeal filed at the FCT High Court, with Appeal No. CRA/2/2025 by Osa Director and Co, lawyers to Mr. Omokri it asked for a stay of execution of the remand order granted by the Magistrate court. Consequently, when the matter came up for hearing on 30th January, 2025, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Chief Emmanuel Iyanna ordered the removal of Omokri’s name from the FIR.

However , we must say that it is extremely unchristian and beneath the character of a pastor to secretly instigate a remand order at a lower court, such as a magistrate court, without even putting Mr. Reno Omokri on notice. Mr. Omokri read about the order on a gossip blog.

And it is the strong opinion of our client that what Mr. Enenche is complaining about (that both Pastor Paul and Becky Enenche) are “irresponsible and mercantile pastors” is justified for the following reasons.

According to Omokri ,”the Body of Christ in Nigeria would not tolerate what Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre did during the #NigerianElections2023 if an Islamic imam with a sizeable congregation had done it. Let us call a spade a spade”.

In the opinion of Mr. Omokri, Pastor Enenche is a highly irresponsible individual for surrendering his pulpit to Peter Obi as a campaigning tool and ferrying him from church to church as he went about proclaiming the Gospel of ‘Church take back your country’.

“If you are a Christian reading this, sit back and ask yourself how you would feel if a Muslim Presidential candidate went to a mosque and said, ‘Muslim Ummah, take back your country!’

Later on, Paul Enenche, standing on the pulpit at Dunamis church told his congregation to call their friends and relatives and “tell them what to vote. Tell them in clean, clear, language. Both the picture, the image, the logo, what to vote. The violent taketh it by force. Clearly”.

Omokri observed that what Pastor Enenche did was not just unethical it goes against the registration restrictions of his church, which is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission for the purpose of spreading the Gospel, not for goal of campaigning for a political party or candidate.

It also goes against the Electoral Act, when you take into account case law that says by virtue of the Theory of Coercive Influence, and the Theory of Psychological Influence, it is an improper use of ecclesiastical authority as a cleric to interfere with people’s choices in an election.

And then on Sunday, January 29, 2023, Pastor Enenche again attacked the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, on the pulpit and said “There are some whose names nobody is sure. Date of birth, nobody is sure. Source of money, nobody is sure. State of health, nobody is sure. Level of sanity and reasoning capacity, nobody is sure. Schools attended, nobody is sure. And yet they are being marketed and advertised to lead the nation to a destination nobody is sure’.

Mr. Enenche’s behaviour is not supported by Scripture. It is also capable of disturbing the peace and creating religious strife in a multiethnic and religiously heterogeneous society like Nigeria, and if he had done what he did in the United States or Great Britain, both his licence to preach and his tax-exempt status would have been revoked.

By virtue of the Companies Income Tax Act, Pastor Paul Enenche’s Dunamis International Gospel Centre enjoys tax exempt status as long as it restricts itself to “ecclesiastical, charitable, or educational activities of a public character”.

By engaging in open and partisan political campaigning while on the pulpit, even to the point of telling people who to vote for, with their photos, Pastor Enenche violated that provision, and the Body of Christ would not tolerate that coming from a major Muslim cleric.

They just had an election in America and South Africa. How many times did Nigerians see the candidates campaigning in churches or mosques?

And then mounting the pulpit to place curses on the winner of the election if he allegedly (according to Pastor Enenche) rigged the election is also not supported by Scripture.

In the words of Omokri, “President Bola Tinubu did not rig the election. He won it according to the Supreme Court. Peter Obi was not cheated. He came a distant third”.

Additionally, his wife, Becky Enenche, displayed a high level of dishonesty and unethical behaviour by stating that “every time you miss your tithes, you go back to square one. The ones you did before becomes (sic) nullified. It is like you pressed a delete button.”

That statement is not supported by Scripture, and it brings the entire body of Christ into disrepute, not only Dunamis. It does so by making Christianity look like a deceitful religion where pastors are only interested in your money.

The irresponsibility of that statement, especially after it went viral, has the capacity to undermine the faith of true believers and prevent the formation of virtues. Lovers of God should speak up when people like Becky Enenche are using the faith to financially manipulate Christians.

For example, on multiple occasions, her husband, Paul Enenche, urged Nigerians to vote for Peter Obi. Due to available records, I know for a fact that Peter Obi does not pay tithes but rather gives offerings as a devoted Catholic.

If what Becky Enenche said about tithes were true, would it not amount to a contradiction and a conflict of faith for her husband to tell his congregation and other Christians to vote for a man who does not tithe?

If a man who does not tithe becomes President, what would happen to Nigeria’s economy? Becky Enenche preached that nothing can prosper under the hand of a believer who does not tithe.

Nigerians should put religious and political sentiments aside. Ask yourself what will happen to Christianity in Nigeria if we allow people like Pastors Paul and Becky Enenche to continue spreading their monetised cash and carry Christianity without Scripturally countering them.

Yeshua (Jesus) never requested for or received tithes. None of His disciples or Paul requested for or received tithes. Why?

Because tithes were an agricultural tax imposed on Jews from the eleven tribes other than the tribe of Levi and meant for the Levitical priests because they were not given a land inheritance when Moses shared out the promised land.

There is no single instance of paying monetary tithes in Scripture.

The only alternative to agricultural produce was alcoholic beverages. We see this in Deuteronomy 14:24-26:

“But if be God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away), then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice.”

Why did God require the ancient Israelites to pay tithes of their farm produce?

Joshua 13:14 gives the answer.

“But to the tribe of Levi, he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.”

With the above justifications, our client, Mr. Reno Omokri ready to meet with Enenche in court if he chose to continue with the matter.”
