Factional President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu, said one of the major problems of the body is the South East governors, who according to him, use money to destabilise the apex body.
Okwukwu’s reaction follows a parallel convention held on January 9 and 10, 2025 in Enugu and Port Harcourt, which produced himself and Senator John Azuta-Mbata as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo respectively.
In an interview with VANGUARD, Okwukwu described the group that produced Senator Azuta-Mbata as President General of Ohanaeze in Enugu, insisting that he is the authentic President General of the apex body of Ndigbo.
He queried the modalities behind conducting an “election” in Government House when the normal practice was the state who would produce the next President General.
He said: “Of course, the governors are part of the problem in Igboland. I have asked you a question, are elections held in government houses? They went to the Enugu State Government House to hold elections. Did you see accreditation, did you see voting? Did you see ballot papers and ballot boxes? The governors don’t own Ohanaeze.”
He argued that the apex body of Ndigbo belongs to the people and not the governors, urging them (South East governors) to leave the body alone.
“Ohanaeze is the property of the people. Ohanaeze is the patrimony of the people and not the governors. The governors are tenured. Now, the question I want them to answer is when we were under the military era when governors were not from Igboland, what role did the governors play? Because under the military, governors were posted outside their states to rule. So what role did they play?
“The governors should leave the Ohanaeze alone because they are just members.”
