The Cross River State Police Command has launched a manhunt for two suspected cultists, identified only as Mr. Aziz and FBI, following the murder of their friend, Mr. Benji (surname withheld), over proceeds from internet fraud.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Irene Ugbo disclosed the incident on Thursday in Calabar during a telephone conversation with our correspondent, noting that the case had not been reported to the police.

Ugbo stated that the Command took immediate action to apprehend the suspects upon learning of the incident, in an effort to bring them to justice.

According to the PPRO, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 2nd, when the suspected cultists allegedly killed Benji, said to be their friend, before dismembering his body and disposing of it in a sack.

An anonymous source quoted by LEADERSHIP reported that the deceased’s troubles began after he profited N5 million from a fraudulent internet business, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo business’.

“He was a ‘Yahoo boy.’ He scammed someone out of about N5 million. One of his girlfriends learned about the money and leaked the information to some of his friends, who were involved in cult activities. Since he owed them N300,000 and they heard he had such a sum, they lured him to their meeting place and attacked him with a machete.

“He transferred N500,000 to them, but they were not satisfied. After taking his phone, they discovered an alert indicating he still had some money. They began beating him again and forcefully obtained his PIN code to transfer all his funds into their account,” the source revealed.

Upon realising that Benji was dead, the suspects severed his body into pieces, disposed of the mutilated remains in a sack, and transported them to his grandmother’s house on Spring Road in Ekoirinim community, Calabar Municipal local government area, where he had been residing.

The grandmother became suspicious of foul play after noticing blood leaking from the sack and raised the alarm, but it was too late, as the suspects had already fled the scene.

The police have intensified their search for the fleeing suspects, assuring the public that they will be apprehended and brought to face the full force of the law.
