BREAKING: TCN Debunks Report Of National Grid Collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that recent disruptions in power supply were caused by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line, countering claims that the national grid had collapsed.

Previously, widespread reports suggested that the national grid failed on Saturday.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah refuted these claims, calling them misinformation.

“The TCN confirms that the nation’s grid did not collapse today, despite the inaccurate reports circulating in the media.

“Earlier today, at approximately 13:41 Hrs, the Osogbo-Ihovour line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line. This notably affected bulk supply only to the Lagos region,” Mbah stated.

She also noted that just before the tripping, at around 13:00, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63 MW. Following the trippings, generation fell to 2,573.23 MW, clearly indicating that the grid did not experience any failure.

Mbah explained that the tripping affected Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotoso, Geregu, and Paras, all of which have now been restored, except for the Benin-Omotosho 330 kV line, which is currently undergoing restoration.

“As TCN works diligently to establish a robust transmission grid despite ongoing challenges, it is crucial to recognise the detrimental effects of intentionally misinforming the public and the importance of sharing accurate and verifiable information,” Mbah added.
