A prominent high chief in Yoruba land, High Chief Muraina Waheed Olanshile Alexander, has strongly resisted the introduction of Islamic law, commonly known as Sharia law, in Yoruba land.
The Bashorun Agbaakin of Yoruba land expressed his opposition to the proposed Islamic law, warning that its introduction could lead to crisis and unrest in the region.
In a statement, High Chief Alexander emphasised, “We know that in Yoruba land, we have three major religions—Islam, Christianity, and traditional beliefs. Introducing Sharia law would undoubtedly result in religious conflict. I call on all traditional rulers and chiefs to stand against this move by some unscrupulous elements pursuing their own selfish interests. We must not allow the hard-won efforts of our ancestors to be undone.”
He continued, “We must resist the efforts of some individuals who aim to enslave us and our children yet unborn. This is Yoruba land, and we are not Arabs; Sharia law is not for us. We honour the religion of our forefathers and must not allow ourselves to be enslaved in our own land.”
As the CEO of Shile Alexander Properties, High Chief Alexander further stated that those attempting to introduce Sharia law in Yoruba land are only seeking to create unnecessary conflict, and he urged the people to unite and stop them.
