Okonjo-Iweala, receiving her THISDAY Award in Davos, described “indomitable Nduka Obaigbena” as one of the most creative people in Africa.
The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been presented with the 2024 THISDAY Award for Woman of the Year.
The award was presented by Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the THISDAY ARISE Media Group, at the conclusion of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and praised Prince Obaigbena for his creativity and dedication.
“Thank you to the most indomitable Nduka Obaigbena, who is one of the most creative people I know on the continent. I want to thank you for taking the trouble in this very cold weather to present me with this award. I am very grateful to THISDAY for this recognition and to all the audiences who have supported this,” she said.
Reflecting on her past honours from THISDAY, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala noted, “This is not the first time I have received a THISDAY award. When I was finance minister, you also recognised me… But this is very special, and I promise you, I don’t take it lightly.”
The WTO chief reiterated her commitment to representing Nigeria and Africa on the global stage.
“I will continue to do my best to try and represent the country and the continent the best way I can and to make sure that the dividends of development also flow our way,” she concluded.
The event highlighted Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s enduring contributions to global economic governance and her advocacy for equitable development. As one of Africa’s most influential leaders, she has consistently championed initiatives to improve trade, reduce poverty, and enhance economic opportunities for developing nations.
Obaigbena, in presenting the award, acknowledged Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s exceptional achievements, lauding her as a role model and a testament to the excellence emanating from the continent.
