Nigeria’s domestic airfare for a single journey surged by 25.51% in August 2024, reaching an average of N123,700, compared to N98,561 recorded in July, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The significant rise was revealed in the NBS Transport Fare Watch report released on Tuesday.

On a year-on-year basis, airfare costs experienced an even sharper increase, climbing by 56.56% from N79,011.38 in August 2023 to N123,700 in August 2024.

The report highlighted that Niger State had the highest air transport charges at N129,575.21, followed by the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, at N129,442.67.

Zamfara State recorded the lowest airfare, with an average cost of N102,665.89, while Cross River followed at N120,088.93.

The hike in airfare comes alongside rising costs in other transportation modes, such as road, water, and rail, driven by escalating energy prices, further straining the finances of Nigerian travellers.
