The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, on Sunday, expressed his commendation for Ghana’s peaceful presidential elections held on December 7, 2024.
In a statement, Touray congratulated the Ghanaian people for their exemplary demonstration of democratic maturity, which ensured a smooth electoral process.
Touray also congratulated John Mahama, the former president and candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who emerged victorious in the polls.
The ECOWAS chief lauded Mahama’s victory as a testament to Ghana’s robust democratic processes, underscoring the importance of peaceful transitions in a region often marred by political turmoil.

Further, the regional body praised Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for his swift concession of defeat, acknowledging his “statesmanship and love for country.”
In his statement, Bawumia confirmed that he had personally called Mahama to congratulate him, stating, “The people of Ghana have spoken and they have voted for change at this time. We respect this with all humility.”
The successful conclusion of Ghana’s election marks the end of two terms in power for the New Patriotic Party under President Nana Akufo-Addo.
