The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed concerns over minors’ detention following the August 1 #Endbadgovernance protest.
He challenged security agencies to focus their efforts on arresting the true instigators of the unrest, rather than detaining innocent children.
Sanusi made these remarks on Wednesday during a visit to the minors at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital in Kano, where they are being rehabilitated after their release.
“Many of them are students who go to school. They were picked up in the streets, not in the middle of the violent act,” Sanusi stated.
He added that the treatment the minors received was “sad,” but thanked the federal government and the presidency for their timely intervention in securing their release.
He stressed, “If this had continued, I am sure many of them would have lost their lives.”
The Emir also urged the authorities to target the adults responsible for starting the riot, noting that the individuals behind the violence in Kano had been photographed and were still seen walking freely in public, including in Abuja.
He emphasised the importance of identifying and prosecuting the real culprits to prevent further injustices.
Sanusi expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Kano Governor Abba Yusuf for their efforts in ensuring the minors’ release and to all individuals who contributed to their rehabilitation.
