The Niger State Police Command has apprehended three individuals who allegedly posed as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to abduct and extort students in Lapai.

The suspects—Emmanuel Linus, 30, from Deidei, Abuja; Hyelda Aliyu, 28, from Nyanya, Abuja; and Abduljallid Tanko, 33, from Karo, Abuja—were arrested on May 13, 2025.

Their arrest came after police operatives tracked a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABJ 245 CU to Suleja Road, near Kwakuti.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspects used counterfeit EFCC identification cards, all bearing the same fake ID number, 1069. These cards were reportedly produced at a shop in Nyanya, Abuja.

The trio allegedly stormed a student’s room wielding electric tasers disguised as firearms, seized five mobile phones, and abducted two students. They initially demanded a ransom of N10 million from the victims’ families but later reduced it to N500,000.

Further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices—Mohammed Hassan and Hamisu Adamu—from Angwan-Hausa, Lapai, who were identified as the informants. They had allegedly tipped off the suspects about the students’ whereabouts.

The police also disclosed that Emmanuel Linus is a dismissed soldier with a history of criminal activity and was previously imprisoned two years ago.

All five suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and will face prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Port Harcourt Zonal Command, have apprehended 31 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud.

The arrests were made on Wednesday at various locations across Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to cybercrime-related activities.
