Farotimi prosecuted, remanded in prison | Daily Report Nigeria

Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi case took another turn on Wednesday as the Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court denied his bail, and remanded him in prison custody.

Farotimi’s troubles began following a petition by renowned legal figure, Afe Babalola (SAN), who alleged that Farotimi’s book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” contained false statements that tarnished his reputationreputation.

The charges against Farotimi include defamation and criminally publishing false information with the intent to harm.

Specifically, the book accused Babalola and other lawyers of influencing the Supreme Court in a corrupt manner.

The court argued that these statements, which were allegedly false, could cause public fear, harm reputations, and disturb the peace.

Farotimi’s legal team, led by Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand call and pleaded with the court to admit the defendant to bail on very liberal terms.

However, the presiding Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, denied the bail request and remanded Farotimi in prison custody.

The case has been adjourned until December 10, 2024, for further proceedings.
