Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been handed a two-match ban by FIFA for “offensive behavior,” as confirmed by the Argentine Football Association on Saturday.

The Aston Villa player was deemed to have violated the principles of fair play in two separate incidents. One violation took place after Argentina’s World Cup qualifier victory over Chile on September 5, when he held a replica of the Copa America trophy to his groin.

This type of behavior is not new for Martinez; he had previously posed similarly with the Golden Glove trophy following Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final.

This type of behavior is not new for Emiliano Martinez; he had previously posed similarly with the Golden Glove trophy following Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final.

Additionally, FIFA sanctioned him for striking a TV cameraman’s camera with his gloves after Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Colombia on September 10.

In response to the ruling, the Argentine Football Association expressed strong disagreement, stating their dissatisfaction with the FIFA disciplinary committee’s decision.

As a result of the ban, Emiliano Martinez will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15. Currently, Argentina tops the South American qualifying table with 18 points after eight matches, with Colombia trailing just two points behind.
