The deal, reached with the European Club Association (ECA), for the first time covers players who featured in qualifiers even if they do not play in the expanded 48-team 2026 finals.

In 2022, the governing body distributed $209 million to 440 clubs “from 51 FIFA member associations”, – it noted.

The new arrangement aims to recognise clubs’ role in player development and to share more fairly the financial benefits of international football.

“The enhanced edition of the FIFA Club Benefits Programme for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is going a step further by recognising financially the huge contribution that so many clubs and their players around the world make to the staging of both the qualifiers and the final tournament,” – said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“Clubs play a pivotal role in the success of national team football and this initiative recognises every element of it, from early development through to release for the most important games,” – said ECA boss and Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi.

In addition to helping smaller teams financially, the larger award will reward long-term player commitment by paying for qualifications.

As a result, FIFA expects national teams and clubs to cooperate more smoothly on player release and development ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
