First Yoruba-English 4-in-1 Qur’an debuts

Dr Dauda Awwal, Qur’an scholar and author, has unveiled the Global English-Yoruba Qur’an 4-in-1 Project.

Speaking with The Nation, Dr Awwal said the Qur’an combines the original Arabic text, full transliteration for accurate pronunciation, a linguistically faithful Yoruba translation, and an English translation with commentary, Hadith, biblical references, and scientific insight in a single volume.

He said the landmark initiative is the first time such a unified version has been produced for global audiences, particularly Yoruba-speaking Muslims across continents.

The scholar explained that the project integrates essential elements necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an while preserving linguistic and cultural relevance.

He also launched a pioneering children’s edition, titled: My First 13 Surahs for Children, designed for readers, aged five to 10.

The edition comprises 13 short Surahs with Arabic, Yoruba, and English translations, colourful illustrations, interactive worksheets, audio-visual recitations, and a mobile application to facilitate digital learning.

Dr Awwal said the translation was inspired by a gap in authentic Yoruba Qur’anic resources.

“Reverend Samuel Cole translated parts of the Qur’an into Yoruba in 1906, but his work lacked Arabic texts, transliteration, and accurate interpretation. For over a century, Yoruba-speaking Muslims have had no authentic reference that combines all these elements in one resource. This project will not only bridge that gap but also bring the Qur’an closer to millions of Yoruba communities across the globe,” he said.

Dr Awwal revealed that five million copies of “My First 13 Surahs” are to be printed and distributed free of charge worldwide, with one million copies each targeted at Europe, America, and Asia, and two million copies in Africa.

He added that the copies will also be available digitally via mobile apps and interactive e-books to ensure accessibility.

He urged global sponsors, Islamic organisations, and philanthropists to support the initiative.

“It is a cultural legacy, a tool for interfaith understanding, and a bridge for future generations. We are inviting global leaders, including His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to help us make this vision a reality,” he said.

A graduate of Muhammad Ibn Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dr Awwal has authored more than 50 books and has received worldwide recognition, including acknowledgment from the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

The project had earlier been formally presented to the Nigeria High Commission in London and Nigerian communities in the United Kingdom
