A fuel tanker carrying 40,000 litres of fuel crashed and exploded in Niger State on Monday evening, injuring the driver and his motorboy.

The incident occurred along the Agaie-Lapai Road when the tanker’s tyre burst, causing it to lose control and crash into a nearby drainage.

According to an eyewitness, Abdul, the tanker was heading to Kaduna from Lagos State when the incident occurred.

“The tanker had a tyre burst, resulting in its crash and spilling of the 40,000 litres of fuel,” Abdul said.

The Niger State Police Command’s spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the accident in a WhatsApp message.

“On 27/1/2025 at about 6.30 pm, there was a lone fuel tanker accident with a fire explosion along Agaie/Lapai Road. The fuel tanker with Reg. No. DKA 03 A, driven by one Shamsudeen Dayabu of Matazun LGA of Katsina State on transit from Lagos to Kaduna and loaded with about 40,000 litres of PMS.”

Abiodun stated that the driver and motorboy were injured in the incident and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“No life was lost during the incident as the road was temporarily closed, but normalcy was later restored for road users,” he added.

This incident comes barely a week after a similar tanker explosion killed over 100 people in the state.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that 411 persons lost their lives while scooping fuel from fallen tankers in 2024.

This revelation was made by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, while addressing newsmen on the 2024 special patrol operations in Abuja.
