"Mummy, Leave Me Alone" - Senator Shehu Sani Tells El-Rufai's Wife | Daily Report Nigeria

A war of words erupted on Twitter between Hadiza El-Rufai, the former First Lady of Kaduna State, and Senator Shehu Sani over a grammatical error.

The dispute began when Sani commented on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s international travels, suggesting they impact the economy. El-Rufai corrected Sani’s grammar, which led to a heated exchange.

Sani had posted, “New law of economics; When the President travels out, Taxes and Prices goes up.” El-Rufai, known for correcting grammar on social media, pointed out the error, suggesting it should be “go up” instead of “goes up.”

In response, Sani told El-Rufai to “leave me alone,” adding that despite unfollowing each other, she still lingered around him.

The exchange sparked reactions from Nigerians, with some defending El-Rufai’s correction and others criticizing her for focusing on grammar amid larger issues.

One user wrote, “If you converted this grammatical energy into moral energy and channeled it on your husband, Southern Kaduna population for no reduce significantly during his 8 horrible years in charge.”

Another user defended Sani’s original post, stating the correct phrase is indeed “price goes up” since “price” is a singular noun.
