A tense atmosphere enveloped the venue of the Edo election petition tribunal in Benin City on Wednesday as suspected masked thugs fired gunshots, causing panic among passersby.
The incident occurred near the High Court complex on Reservation Street, by Ezoti Junction.

The Chairman of the APC in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, condemned the incident, stating, “Today’s shooting incident within the venue of the Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City involving members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party is a deeply disturbing and unacceptable act of violence.”

In response, the acting chairman of the state PDP Caretaker Committee, Tony Aziegbemi, denied the allegations.
He said, “We strongly dissociate ourselves from the shooting incident that occurred today at the venue of the Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City and want to unequivocally state that this shameful incident is yet another in the series of clandestine efforts by the APC to frustrate the legal process and tarnish the image of our party.”

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has disclosed that the 18 Local Government Councils in the state received over N83 billion in federal allocations in one year.
According to the governor, the councils received over N6.5 billion monthly as allocations between January and September 2024, and over N8 billion monthly from October to December.
