The role of every wife traditionally centers around being a supportive partner to her husband, but for Hajia Hiriyya Dauda Lawal, the First Lady of Zamfara State, her responsibilities extend far beyond that of mere support. She embodies a unique form of leadership that invigorates every initiative she undertakes. A soft-spoken yet profoundly respectful woman, Hajia Lawal has demonstrated that being the ‘mother of a state’ involves a steadfast commitment to fostering change, particularly for women and children. Since assuming her role alongside her capable husband, the Governor, in 2023, she has quietly but significantly impacted the welfare of her constituents.
In contrast to many of her contemporaries who often make minimal contributions in their states, Hajia Lawal has launched an ambitious empowerment program focused on women and girls. She has facilitated numerous entrepreneurship training sessions and provided startup grants to numerous women. Additionally, she has prioritized the provision of educational materials for young girls, demonstrating her commitment to sustainable development. Her strategic use of her office has ensured that the dividends of democracy are effectively channeled towards uplifting those in need, particularly women entrepreneurs and small business owners.
In under two years, Hajia Lawal has been a pivotal force in pushing for reforms that positively impact the lives of women and girls across Zamfara. She has led extensive awareness campaigns about cancer, earning her a prestigious position as the national Secretary of the First Ladies Against Cancer Initiative. Her commitment to health extends further; she has initiated rural sensitization programs aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates and promoting safe childbirth practices, showcasing her holistic approach to women’s health and well-being.

Under her leadership, Zamfara State has seen the distribution of essential equipment for technical and vocational training, along with startup funds for artisans who have received formal recognition through certificates. These initiatives are designed to equip women with the skills necessary for employment and entrepreneurship, paving the way for economic independence.
Recently, as part of the Women Economic Empowerment Programme, Hajia Lawal supervised the distribution of N50,000 business grants to 500 carefully selected women from across the state. This initiative, supported by the Renewed Hope Initiative and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, aims to enhance human capital investment in Zamfara. By fostering growth and productivity, Hajia Lawal seeks to reduce reliance on government assistance, advocating instead for a dynamic, competitive business environment rooted in private partnerships. Her unwavering dedication serves as an inspiring testament to the potential of women’s leadership and transformative change within communities.
