“Intelligence Sector Grossly Underfunded” – Reps Committee

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has decried the zero capital release for counter-terrorism in 2023 and 2024.

Chairman Ahmed Satomi made this known during a budget defence meeting with agencies under the committee’s oversight jurisdiction.

Satomi expressed concern that frontline agencies responsible for countering violent extremism, terrorism, and intelligence gathering are negligibly funded.

He noted that the total allocation of N595,024,943,368 billion to the sub-sector in the 2025 budget is inadequate.

“For this laudable allocation, may I, however, note that the intelligence subsector appears to be grossly underfunded,” Satomi said.

He emphasized that the National Centre for Counter-Terrorism has not received any capital release since 2023, and other agencies like the National Institute for Security Studies and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons are yet to receive funding for their capital projects in 2024.

Satomi called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and increase the allocations to agencies in the intelligence sector.

He also urged the Minister of Finance to prioritize the full release of outstanding 2024 budget allocations to the intelligence agencies.
