The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has issued a strong appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to provide immediate relief to communities devastated by recent floods in the Niger Delta.
The IYC Western Zone said this through its Information Officer, Comrade Tare Magbei, who emphasized the urgent need for federal intervention, highlighting the severe impact of the disaster on Ijaw communities along the region’s coastline.
According to the group, the floodwaters have overtaken many homes and communities, leaving residents displaced and struggling to secure basic needs.
The organization called on the federal and state governments to urgently set up Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and distribute relief materials to those affected.

The Council also expressed disappointment over what it described as a lack of response for the Niger Delta region, contrasting it with recent relief actions in Borno State.
The IYC noted that the Federal Government’s swift response to other crisis-hit regions demonstrates the capacity for coordinated intervention and implored the government to extend similar measures to the Niger Delta.

The statement reads;
“The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone urgently calls on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to respond swiftly and decisively to the devastating flood crisis affecting numerous communities across the Niger Delta, particularly in Ijaw regions along the coastline.
“This year’s flood has overwhelmed many Ijaw communities, rendering homes uninhabitable, displacing families, and destroying livelihoods.
“Given the magnitude of the disaster, it is imperative that immediate and comprehensive action is taken by the relevant government agencies to alleviate the suffering of our people.
“We are calling on the federal and state governments to establish IDP camps, distribute essential relief materials, and provide other necessary support to these affected communities.
“The IYC also notes with disappointment that while the Federal Government has demonstrated significant concern and action towards addressing similar crises in regions like Borno, similar intervention in the Niger Delta remains lacking.
“We urge NEMA and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to prioritize the affected Niger Delta communities and deliver aid with the same commitment and urgency that has been shown elsewhere in the country.
“As a body committed to advocating for the welfare of the Ijaw people and the prosperity of the Niger Delta region, we appeal for genuine compassion and immediate intervention from all relevant authorities to support and protect our communities in this moment of dire need.”
