The National Examinations Council (NECO) has confirmed the full payment of allowances to the 72,138 examiners hired for the 2024 School-Based Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), putting to rest rumors of withheld payments.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, Azeez Sani, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NECO, announced that the Council had successfully concluded the payment process for all the examiners.

Payments were made in phases, starting on October 4, 2024, using a bank-by-bank method to ensure seamless reconciliation and avoid discrepancies.

“As of today, all payments have been cleared and received by the examiners, in line with NECO’s payment schedule,” the statement read.

NECO also addressed initial challenges faced by some examiners, who had submitted incorrect bank details. The Council confirmed that the issues had been resolved and all payments were processed through the 24 participating banks.

The statement further dismissed recent claims circulating on social media that NECO had intentionally withheld payments.

“These claims are unfounded,” the Council said, urging examiners to seek direct clarification from the agency rather than airing grievances through media channels.

“We value the crucial role played by our examiners and other ad hoc staff in the successful conduct of the examination process. Their contributions are vital to NECO’s operations, and we ensure that all entitlements are promptly settled,” NECO reiterated in the statement.

This comes after several reports that some examiners had threatened protests over alleged non-payment of allowances, a situation that has now been resolved.
