New Emoji Lineup Unveiled for 2025

In a delightful update for emoji enthusiasts, eight new emojis are set to grace smartphones and computers next year.

Among the new additions are a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a fingerprint, a shovel, a purple splatter, and a flag representing the remote island of Sark in the English Channel.

It was revealed that Emojipedia, the well-regarded emoji reference site, had previously released sample images of these emojis.

Recently, the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organisation responsible for global emoji standards and new releases, gave the green light to this new lineup.

According to Emojipedia, smartphone users can expect to start using these new emojis across various digital devices over the coming months and throughout 2025.

The exhausted face emoji, featuring bags under its eyes, has been particularly well-received, winning the title of “most anticipated” emoji at the World Emoji Awards with over 60 per cent of the vote. The purple splatter and the shovel emojis secured second and third places, respectively.

Brian Baihaki, who submitted the leafless tree emoji to the Unicode Consortium, explained that it aims to raise awareness about drought and climate change.

Baihaki said:
Drought is a natural part of the climate cycle, and for millions of years, trees have adapted to these harsh conditions.

“However, with climate change, droughts are becoming more frequent, severe, and widespread.”

Different operating systems, such as Apple iOS and Alphabet’s Android, along with various companies, will put their unique spin on these emoji designs.

This often leads to some interesting interpretations, such as Google’s infamous floating foam above a half-full glass of beer and the misplaced cheese on its hamburger emoji, both of which have since been corrected.
