Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that Nigeria’s federal system is not inherently flawed but rather poorly managed, with a lack of accountability and collective fiscal responsibility being major concerns.
Speaking at the 7th edition of the Leadership Conference and Awards in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the need for reform to make the federal structure more effective.
According to Shettima, “problems attributed to the current federal system often stem from poor management of resources rather than inherent flaws in the country’s constitutional architecture.

“He stressed the importance of prudent resource management, local government autonomy, and sincere dialogue to create a federal structure tailored to Nigeria’s unique complexities.

“We must resist the temptation to romanticize foreign systems or prescribe imported solutions that fail to account for our distinct social, ethnic, and demographic complexities,” Shettima said.
Shettima highlighted efforts by the Tinubu administration to make the federal structure more effective, including pushing for local government autonomy and recent policy choices like fuel subsidy removal and tax reforms.
He commended the Leadership Media Group for creating a platform for national dialogue and honouring individuals who embody values of integrity, innovation, and impact.
