Nigerians React to Presidency’s Criticism of Obasanjo

The recent criticism of former President Olusegun Obasanjo by President Bola Tinubu’s administration has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians.

The Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, dismissed Obasanjo’s critique of the current administration, calling him a man with a “tremendous capacity for mischief.”

Dare’s comments, made on November 18, 2024, centered around Obasanjo’s criticism of Tinubu’s leadership and his handling of Nigeria’s economic challenges, particularly regarding energy and corruption.

Dare responded by accusing Obasanjo’s government of mismanaging $16 billion meant for electricity development, claiming that Obasanjo no longer had the moral authority to criticize any Nigerian government.

He further stated that Tinubu’s administration is focused on getting Nigeria back on track and is addressing the issues Obasanjo’s government left unresolved.

However, many Nigerians have taken to social media to counter Dare’s comments, defending Obasanjo and questioning the handling of the country’s issues under Tinubu’s leadership.

Some pointed out Obasanjo’s flaws but still acknowledged his significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.

One user, @Oluomoofderby, called Obasanjo “the best president in Nigeria’s history,” while another, @udeochusp, described him as a “child of uncommon grace.”

Others, however, expressed disappointment in Obasanjo’s continued criticism, with some claiming he is seeking attention from the current administration.

@PiusChibuzo reminded Dare’s team that Obasanjo played a role in the emergence of the APC in 2015, and suggested that the administration’s attack on the former president was politically motivated.
