Nnamdi Azikiwe University Hosts Historic Induction of Anatomy Graduands

The atmosphere at Nnamdi Azikiwe University was filled with joy and nostalgia as the inaugural Induction and Valedictory Ceremony of the BSc Anatomy graduands, affectionately known as “The Meisters 2024,” took place in grand style.

The event marked a significant milestone for the graduates, who were officially inducted into the Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), signifying the start of their professional journey.

Chaired by Prof. Gerald Udigwe, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, the ceremony was a vibrant celebration of academic achievement and a testament to the dedication of the students.

The Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, who was represented by Prof. Udigwe, commended the graduands for their hard work and commitment throughout their academic careers.

In his address, Prof. Ikechebelu reiterated the university’s unwavering support for the advancement of anatomy education, unveiling plans to establish a state-of-the-art ICT center on the medical campus.

“Today marks the beginning of your journey as professionals in the field of anatomy, and we stand by you as you take on the challenges and opportunities ahead,” said Prof. Ikechebelu. “We are committed to continually improving our resources to support your education and future endeavors.”

The Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Ngozi Okpogba, encouraged the graduates to stay connected with the university, emphasizing the importance of contributing to its growth and upholding the values instilled in them during their studies.

“You are not just graduates, you are ambassadors of this great institution. The onus is on you to build on the foundation laid here,” Prof. Okpogba noted.

Dr. Uzozie Ofoego, Head of the Anatomy Department, addressed the graduates with words of encouragement, urging them to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.

“You are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a significant impact in the world. Seize every opportunity that comes your way, and remember that we, your mentors, will always be here to support you,” Dr. Ofoego stated.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. S.B. Danborno, President of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria, who explored the theme “Charting the Future: From Anatomical Studies to Global Health Impact.”

In his speech, Prof. Danborno highlighted the role of anatomy in global healthcare, stressing the importance of utilizing modern teaching tools like virtual dissection tables to enhance the learning experience.

He also called on the graduates to leverage their expertise in anatomy to address pressing global health challenges.

Also, Dr. Chrys Promesse Kaniki, Senior Technical Officer at Africa CDC, encouraged the graduands to contribute to public health advancements, particularly in the African context.

A peer inspiration session by Mr. Joseph Ojighoro, founder of OJ Technology Ltd., inspired the graduates to explore innovation in medical technology.

The ceremony also recognized outstanding students, with Chukwuma Maryqueen Ugochi being crowned the best overall graduand. She was awarded a ₦200,000 cash prize for her exceptional academic performance.

Jemimas Think Tank Initiative pledged ₦400,000 to support the best student in embryology, further solidifying the commitment to academic excellence. Additional course awards were sponsored by various anatomy staff and organizations, including Mr. Sylvester Anichebe, Viva Fertility Clinic, and Bright Medic Empower.

Nine prestigious society awards were presented to individuals who have excelled in various fields, including:

Award of Excellence in Medical Technology Innovation – Mr. Joseph Ojighoro, Founder/CEO, OJ Technology Ltd.

Traditional Heritage and Leadership Award – HRH Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III, Igwe of Nnewi kingdom

Educational Impact Award – Dr. Isaac Olufadewa, CEO & Founder, Slum and Rural Health Initiative

Grassroot Leadership and Talent Development Award – Dr. Chibueze Lawrence Ofobuike, Mayor, Aguata LGA

Real Estate Leadership Award – ESV Arnold Chukwuebuka Ekweoba, CEO, Arnold and Associates
