A suspected serial vandal, Chidiebere Ohama, from Umuariaga in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, narrowly escaped lynching on Friday after allegedly vandalising and selling a ladder belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
Ohama, who was caught by local vigilante operatives while trying to flee the Mission Hill area of Umuahia, claimed he had been saving the proceeds from his criminal activities to fund travel documents for a trip to Libya.

He admitted spending the rest of the money on hard drugs and Indian hemp.
“I take drugs, mainly SK and Igbo (Indian hemp),” Ohama confessed. “I wanted to use the money from selling stolen items to travel to Libya. I am begging for forgiveness. My father is late, and my mother lives in the village.”
The suspect revealed during interrogation that he dismantled the ladder and sold it to a scrap dealer at New Road, Umuahia. He further claimed to live in a forest area known as “Down Below,” alongside other suspected criminals, from where they launch theft operations targeting government and private metal property.
One of the vigilante operatives, Chinonye Ikwuagwu, said the community had been battling frequent theft of metal objects and household items.
After being tied up by the vigilantes, Ohama was handed over to officers of the Rapid Response Squad from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, for a full investigation.
