The House of Representatives on Tuesday advanced a pivotal bill aimed at involving the Nigerian Armed Forces in agricultural production, a move intended to enhance food security and promote economic diversification.

Sponsored by Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), the bill seeks to establish Armed Forces Farms and Ranches across the country.

Leading the debate, Benson highlighted the initiative as a strategic effort to leverage the military’s resources to boost agricultural output.

“This initiative aims to reduce our reliance on oil revenue and address food security challenges by utilizing the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited,” he stated.

Benson noted that the scheme is not unprecedented, citing past military agricultural efforts primarily for personnel sustenance.

“By involving the military, we can increase food production, stabilize prices, and reduce imports,” Benson asserted.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other government ministries to ensure a comprehensive approach to agriculture that includes crop cultivation alongside livestock and fish farming.

The bill also addresses the correlation between food insecurity and national security, arguing that agricultural involvement could mitigate youth unrest and criminality.

“Military engagement in agriculture serves as a kinetic approach to combat insecurity, while simultaneously stimulating the economy,” he added.
