In a historic development, Robert Prevost, a cardinal from the United States, has been elected as the new pope, becoming the first American pontiff in history. The conclave, which brought together 133 voting cardinals from around the world, concluded with Prevost emerging as the chosen successor to the papacy. According to Vatican tradition, Prevost will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

The election process was marked by secrecy, with the cardinals sequestered inside the Vatican during the conclave. To secure the papacy, a candidate required a two-thirds majority of the votes cast. The white smoke billowing above the Sistine Chapel signaled that a new pope had been elected on the second day of the conclave.
