President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Engineer Olayinka Hakeem Babalola on his election as President of Rotary International for the 2026/2027 calendar year, describing the feat as a historic achievement and a source of national pride.

Babalola, a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt, was elected by the Rotary International Board of Directors following the resignation of SangKoo Yun on health grounds. He will officially assume office on July 1, 2026.

His emergence makes him the second Nigerian and African to lead the global humanitarian organisation in its 120-year history.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga yesterday, President Tinubu commended Babalola’s dedication to philanthropy, community service, and professional excellence, noting that his leadership in the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Rotary International had left enduring legacies.

The President said his new role reflects years of service marked by impactful projects that strengthened communities, uplifted lives, and advanced peace and human dignity.

“Engineer Babalola’s election will inspire millions of Nigerians, especially the younger generation, by demonstrating that anyone can achieve global recognition and lead transformative change with vision, integrity, and dedication to service,” Tinubu said.

He assured the incoming Rotary International leader of Nigeria’s support as he prepares to take on the role, urging him to continue championing humanitarian causes, fostering global partnerships, and promoting the values of service to humanity.

The President wished Babalola a successful tenure, adding: “As you prepare to assume office, you can count on our support and encouragement to continue championing humanitarian causes, fostering international partnerships, and promoting the spirit of service to humanity.”

Tinubu further expressed confidence that Babalola’s tenure would open new opportunities for collaboration between Rotary International and Nigerian communities in addressing pressing social and developmental needs.
