UNIZIK Rejects FG’s Removal Of New VC, Registrar

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has firmly rejected the federal government’s cancellation of the appointments of its new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benard Odoh, and Registrar, R.I. Nwokike.

The Ministry of Education had alleged that the appointments did not adhere to established guidelines.

In a recent correspondence to Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, chairman of the university’s governing council, the ministry emphasized the need to suspend all appointments until the incoming Minister of Education is in office.

However, the university’s Registrar responded, asserting that all protocols were duly followed during the appointment process.

Nwokike clarified that there was no formal meeting between the Pro-Chancellor and the Minister of State for Education, and that informal discussions took place instead.

She emphasized that invitations were sent to all relevant stakeholders, ensuring broad participation at the appointment meeting held on October 29, 2024.

Nwokike provided supporting documents, including attendance registers and meeting notices, to substantiate the university’s claims.

The Registrar reiterated that due process was followed, stating, “Of the 18 applicants for the position, 15 attended the interview, and score sheets were duly documented.”

She insisted that the governing council acted within its legal authority and maintained procedural integrity throughout the selection process.

The controversy surrounding the new appointments has elicited mixed reactions from the university community, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expressing concerns over the qualifications of Prof. Odoh.

The union has challenged his credentials, arguing that he does not meet the necessary standards for the position.
