  • Over 20 people were killed in a midnight attack on Bindi community, Ta-Hoss district, Riyom LGA, Plateau State, by suspected Fulani militias who allegedly carried out house-to-house killings.
  • COPDEM accused security forces of negligence, stating the attackers’ hideouts are well-known yet remain untouched, despite repeated community warnings and visible military presence in the area.
  • The group demanded urgent action, including a military operation to dismantle terrorist camps, a state of emergency, and immediate humanitarian aid for affected communities.

At least 20 people were killed on Monday night in a brutal attack on the Bindi community in the Ta-Hoss district of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, reportedly carried out by suspected Fulani militias.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Riyom chapter of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), the attackers struck while residents were asleep, executing a coordinated house-to-house assault that left women, children, and the elderly dead, with many others injured.

The statement, jointly signed by COPDEM Chairman Gideon Manjal and Publicity Secretary Gadu Daniel Dong, described the attack as part of a recurring pattern of violence across Riyom and surrounding areas.

“The attackers, who were properly identified as Fulani extremists by survivors, stormed the Bindi community in Ta-Hoss district of Riyom Local Government Area on Monday night and, in their regular pattern of attack which is consistent with several previous attacks across Riyom and other parts of Plateau, systematically slaughtered over 20 innocent people, including women, children, and old people,” the group stated.

COPDEM alleged that the perpetrators were heavily armed and aimed at exterminating the local population to seize their ancestral land. Homes were reportedly set ablaze, forcing many residents to flee into nearby bushes.

“This assault occurred despite the visible presence of security forces in and around the area, including armoured military assets. Homes were burnt, families displaced, and trauma deepened,” the statement continued.

The group expressed outrage over what they described as consistent failure by the authorities to act on prior intelligence. They claimed that the attackers’ locations are well known to community leaders and security agencies.

“It must be clearly stated that these attackers are not unknown. Their hideouts and base settlements in nearby enclaves have been repeatedly identified and reported by community leaders and local authorities. Yet, year after year, these known threats continue to strike with impunity, often unchallenged,” the group said.

COPDEM condemned the government’s handling of the situation, accusing it of “inaction, negligence, and systemic compromise.”

“The recurring nature of these atrocities points not only to a failure of protection but also raises grave questions about inaction, negligence, and systemic compromise,” it added.

The coalition called on President Bola Tinubu, the Plateau State Government, and security agencies to initiate a full-scale military operation to dismantle terrorist camps allegedly located near the affected communities. They also demanded a state of emergency in the region and immediate humanitarian intervention.

“Our people are being buried daily. We are tired of condolence visits and silence. We are tired of press statements that do not translate to protection.

“The community of Ta-Hoss, like Jol, Rim, Bachi, Wereng, Nding, and other previously hit areas, deserves more than sympathy. They deserve security, dignity, and justice,” COPDEM concluded.
