Burna Boy Reveals How Life in Brixton Shaped His Connection to Jamaican Culture

1 day ago 3

Award-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has opened up about a time in his life when he felt a stronger cultural bond with Jamaica than with his homeland, Nigeria.

During an interview with Capital Xtra in London, the music star reflected on his teenage years in Brixton, a part of the UK known for its rich Caribbean community. He shared that the environment he lived in played a major role in how he identified himself during that period.

“Jamaica has always been a part of me — from my dad playing Super Cat and stuff when I was a kid to me ending up in Brixton, when almost every Nigerian in the UK was either in school or in Peckham. I ended up in Brixton,” Burna Boy explained.

According to him, being constantly surrounded by Jamaicans and other Caribbean nationals made their culture feel like second nature.

“So, I considered myself more Jamaican at the time simply for the fact that everyone around me was Jamaican and Caribbean. There were minimal Nigerians around me at that time. When I go back home to Nigeria, then I’m really a Nigerian. But when I was here, I’m Jamaican. Even the Africans that were my guys were not Nigerians. They were Gambians, Ugandans, and Congolese. There were only two Nigerians in my crew,” he said.

The “African Giant” singer has long acknowledged the influence of reggae and dancehall on his music style, which blends African rhythms with Caribbean soundscapes. He’s also previously described Jamaica as a place that feels like home.

Burna Boy’s ties to Jamaican culture extend beyond music — he was romantically linked to British-Jamaican rapper Stefflon Don between 2019 and 2021.

Popular media influencer Scott Iguma has been remanded in prison following his recent accusations against real estate firm, PWAN.

On Thursday afternoon, the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikoyi ordered that Iguma be held in custody until Monday. This development comes a day after the media personality was arrested and detained at Panti Police Station over claims he made on social media.
