The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, has slammed the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) for demanding the removal of the pipeline surveillance contract from Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited in Urhobo territories.

The council described the UPU’s position as a “blunderous misstep” and accused the group of whipping up ethnic sentiments capable of causing unrest in Delta State.

This was contained in a statement signed by Comrade Nicholas Igarama, Chairman; Barrister Ebi Joshua Olowolayemo, Secretary; and Comrade Tare Magbei, Information Officer of the IYC Western Zone.

The IYC said the contract was awarded to Tantita based on competence and not ethnicity, insisting that it followed an open bidding process where no qualified group was excluded.

“For the purpose of alarming the gullible general public with the right information, it is expedient to clarify that the contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited by the Federal Government was not on ethnic basis, but solely on the ground of competence,” the statement said.

The group defended Tantita’s performance, stating that the company has successfully helped boost Nigeria’s oil production, which is nearing two million barrels per day. It recalled that a similar surveillance job was previously handled by Capt. Hosa Okunbo of Edo State for over eight years without any protest from the UPU.

The council urged President Bola Tinubu to ignore calls for the termination of Tantita’s contract, describing such agitation as “unpatriotic.”

It further called on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to intervene and douse rising tensions in Warri and surrounding areas.

“The IYC Western Zone charges Tantita to remain resolute in its fight against oil theft, illegal bunkering, and continue its impactful corporate social responsibility initiatives,” the group said.
