Tragedy struck over the weekend in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, as a young man identified simply as Prosper reportedly died during a cult initiation ceremony.

Sources revealed that the victim lost his life after undergoing repeated physical drills as part of the initiation into the Aye confraternity. He was said to have earlier expressed interest in joining the group through a relative, identified as Cosmos.

Cosmos, reportedly a senior member of the cult, allegedly introduced Prosper to other members but declined to attend the initiation ceremony himself.

It was during the process that tragedy occurred. Reports indicate that the victim collapsed, with some members later claiming he may have fainted due to a hard drug he allegedly took prior to the event.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said the deceased slumped during the initiation and was rushed to a hospital in Jattu, where he was confirmed dead.

“A suspect is currently in custody in connection with the incident,” Yamu stated. “Investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.”
