President-elect Donald Trump has named tech billionaire Elon Musk as the head of a newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with plans to radically transform the U.S. federal system.

Musk, who has led some of the world’s most innovative companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, will collaborate with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in a bid to streamline government operations and cut down on the country’s $6.5 trillion in annual federal spending.

The announcement, made Tuesday through the Trump transition team, outlines an ambitious agenda to tackle wasteful government spending, reduce excessive regulations, and introduce an entrepreneurial approach to federal agencies.

The initiative is being compared to the “Manhattan Project” of the 21st century, aimed at restructuring the U.S. government in a way that eliminates inefficiency and boosts accountability.

In his statement, Trump expressed strong confidence in Musk’s ability to lead the charge. “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working alongside American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump said. “Together, they will dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies. This is essential to the ‘Save America’ movement.”

Musk, known for his disruptive innovations, echoed the President-elect’s sentiment, promising to “send shockwaves through the system.”

In a statement, Musk noted, “This will become potentially the Manhattan Project of our time, driving large-scale reforms that will transform the way the government operates and make it more responsive to the American people.”

The reform efforts will focus on overhauling redundant federal regulations and combating fraud and waste within the system.

The two leaders also plan to work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement these changes.

Their goal is to conclude the project by July 4, 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Trump added, “Their work will make government more efficient, with a smaller, more accountable structure that will ultimately benefit all Americans.”

Ramaswamy, a strong advocate for free-market principles, is expected to play a central role in pushing for reforms that foster a more agile and cost-effective federal government.

“We will liberate our economy and make the U.S. government accountable to ‘We the People,’” the president-elect added.
