The Nigerian government has announced that testing has begun on the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant, which can produce 700 megawatts of electricity.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu made the revelation on Sunday in Abuja.

The power plant is located in Niger State and has been connected to the national grid, which means that the electricity it generates will be available for the whole country to use.

It is worth $1.3 billion and is the second-largest hydroelectric plant in the country after the Kainji Dam.

The project is expected to generate 2.64 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is almost 10 per cent of Nigeria’s domestic energy needs.

Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant also provides benefits such as flood control, irrigation water, and fish breeding facilities.

The Chinese firms, Sinohydro Corporation Limited and China National Electric Engineering Company are responsible for constructing the power plant.

It aims to boost Nigeria’s power generation and to contribute significantly to economic development in the region.

According to Adelabu, the power plant’s construction and concession process have been completed, and it is now ready for operation.
