President Muhammadu Buhari faces blames for frustrating subsidy removal

Felix Morka, a high-ranking member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has come out in defense of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Morka claimed that their focus was on rectifying the mistakes of the previous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership, which ruled for 16 years.

He argued that the Buhari government spent their tenure cleaning up the mess left behind by the PDP, which created a “phantom economy” where billions of dollars and naira were squandered on non-existent national projects, ultimately ending up in private pockets.

However, it’s important to note that Nigeria’s inflation rate has skyrocketed to over 30 per cent, making essential commodities unaffordable for millions of people.

The recent hike in the cost of living was triggered by President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end fuel subsidies upon taking office.

Despite this, Morka believed that the APC-led government is correcting the wrongs of the PDP leadership and has called for patience with the Tinubu government, assuring that they will deliver on their promises.

Again, the current state of the economy is affecting millions of households, with stalled income growth and rising prices.

The National Bureau of Statistics reports that inflation hit 24.08 per cent in July 2023, and over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty.

He said:

The Buhari administration did nothing in eight years but to clean and mop up the mess made by the PDP.”
